Quantum computers have received a lot of attention in recent years as potential super computers that can solve even the most difficult problems. How did this hype come about? What do quantum computers look like today and what can we do with them? And where will this technology take us in the coming years?

Professor Dr. Simon Trebst from the Institute for Theoretical Physics at the University of Cologne will report on these questions at "Wissenschaft im Rathaus" and illustrate them with examples from his everyday work.

... is a Cluster of Excellence that has been funded since 2019 as part of the German Research Foundation's (DFG ) Excellence Strategy.

The aim of the joint project of the Universities of Cologne, Achen, Bonn and Forschungszentrum Jülich is to create new computer and network architectures based on the principles of quantum mechanics. Quantum computers promise computing power beyond that of all conventional computers (e.g. for materials research, pharmaceuticals or artificial intelligence).
