What do you do when the open community that you desperately need as a queer punk doesn't exist? Just tell yourself that it does exist!

Glue and print fanzines, make and distribute subversive films, write anarchist songs, do it yourself and above all: don't give a fuck!

Little by little, the initial pseudo-community will become a revolutionary wave, even an international movement ...

Queercore: How to Punk a Revolution tells the story of the loose group of North American punk artists who radically placed their queer identities at the center of their own work in the 1980s and 90s - and thus rebelled not only against the then heterosexual male-dominated and latently homophobic punk scene, but also against the overly conformist gay mainstream.

Director Yony Leyser ("William S. Burroughs - A Man Within", "Desire Will Set You Free") lets the dazzling key figures of the movement have their say: the filmmakers Bruce LaBruce and G.B. Jones, the musicians Kim Gordon (Sonic Youth), Jody Bleyle (Team Dresch) and Kathleen Hana (Bikini Kill), their shameless trailblazer John Waters - and many more.

Artists such as Beth Ditto and Peaches talk about how the movement has shaped their understanding of queer life and thinking, which breaks free from all normative restrictions. Film clips, concert excerpts and footage of the most spectacular actions document the scene's multi-layered work. Leyser's stirring portrait of the scene not only closes a gaping hole in non-heterosexual historiography, it is also a fierce appeal against any form of false conformity.
