EVENT
Tour of the life situations and persecution of queer people under National Socialism
The rise to power of the National Socialists meant a deep cut in the lives of queer people. Within a few years, queer infrastructures were smashed and queer people were increasingly subjected to state repression and persecution. For example, around 10,000 queer men and trans* women were deported to concentration camps on the basis of §175, which was tightened in 1935. Half of them did not survive the camps. Queer women, gender non-conforming and trans* people were also affected by various forms of persecution and repression under National Socialism.
The tour takes place on the occasion of the International Day against Homo-, Bi-, Inter- and Transphobia and provides insights into the living situations and persecution of queer people in Hamburg as well as the prison conditions for queer people in Neuengamme concentration camp. Continuities of persecution and exclusion after 1945 and gaps in research on and commemoration of queer victims of National Socialism will also be addressed.
