Annie Leibovitz, David Rieff, Lucinda Childs, Nadine Gordimer and others: For her essay film, filmmaker Nancy D. Kates interviewed all the important living friends and lovers with whom Susan Sontag met in the course of her career as a militant New York intellectual, as well as numerous writers, artists and critics. The focus is on Sontag herself, a charismatic woman who gave numerous interviews in front of the camera over the course of her professional life, which are artfully edited to form the heart of the film. It is about her early love of books and her longing for serious debate, her first experiences in gay bars, her first unhappy marriage and her love affairs with women. Sontag's own words are read by actress Patricia Clarkson. "REGARDING SUSAN SONTAG" is not only a portrait of a fascinating woman, but also a vivid reminder of the city of New York and its particular zeitgeist.
