Patricia Highsmith created world literature with novels such as "Two Strangers on a Train" and "The Talented Mr. Ripley". The film adaptations reach a huge audience. Meanwhile, the master of the psychological thriller kept her private life hidden from the public throughout her life. Not even her family in Texas knows that she is a lesbian. She was only able to publish her lesbian romance novel "Salt and its Price" and "Carol" under a pseudonym in 1952. She writes about her own eventful love life in her diaries and notebooks. These were only discovered after her death in a linen cupboard in her house in Ticino, Switzerland.

Director Eva Vitija uses these notes, which were published for the first time in the fall of 2021 on the author's 100th birthday, to tell the story of Highsmith's loves and passions. Passages from the books, read by Maren Kroymann, are juxtaposed with interviews with former friends and Highsmith's family as well as scenes from the world-famous film adaptations of her novels. Vitija's multi-layered love biography leads us into a realm of longings and obsessions - and sheds new light on one of the most dazzling authors of the 20th century. LOVING HIGHSMITH is also the portrait of a generation of women who found the courage to fight for their right to love with Highsmith's "Carol".
