Maud Lewis (1903-1970) was a Canadian painter whose pictures can be classified as Naïve Painting. For many decades, her name was only known in Canada and, from 1964, in the USA. This changed fundamentally with this biopic by Aisling Walsh from 2016. The focus is on Maud Dowley (outstandingly played by Sally Hawkins, who deserved an Oscar for her performance), who suffers from juvenile arthritis, and her future husband, Everett Lewis (Ethan Hawke), a fishmonger and junk dealer who lives in poor circumstances. Both are very special outsiders who soon find each other. Impressive, almost eye-opening in today's world, is the unmaterialistic, simple, but only seemingly deprived life that both lead in Everett's lonely mini-house in the wilderness (and which is now on display at the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia in Halifax). A great artist in a great life.
