Reiner Ruthenbeck

Reiner Ruthenbeck (1937-2016) was one of the most important sculptors of his generation, whose work, based on an exploration of the sensual qualities of things, explored abstract polarities.

From these pairs of opposites, which manifest themselves in color and material,
Ruthenbeck created situations of balance and calm, both visually and spiritually.

It is little known that Ruthenbeck worked as a photographer before studying at the Düsseldorf Art Academy. In the photographs of people and things,
taken in the late 1950s, his view of the inconspicuous aspects of everyday life emerges, which later inspired his sculptural works.
In the exhibition, a selection of early photographs will be shown alongside sculptures.
