Remember 90s Rave Culture Open Air

In the organizer's words:

Improvised ecstasy in the underground: the pulsating rave scene shaped the 90s in Leipzig and East Germany in a special way. Club culture emerged in recently vacated industrial buildings, offered uncommercial space for the love of electronic music and soon faced the first repressions.

This important cultural dimension of the 90s is taken up as the soundtrack of the transformation period with an open-air rave. In the talk "Between ecstasy and repression - the Leipzig techno scene from 1992 to today", the development of Leipzig's club culture will be discussed. We will then party to trance, house and techno as it was played in Leipzig's first techno club "Basis Leipzig" or in the "Distillery", the "Opera Dancehall" and the "JAM" - together with (former) Leipzig DJs and acts from today's local club scene. The 90s Open Air Rave is a highlight of the program accompanying the special exhibition "Between Awakening and Winding Down. The 90s in Leipzig" (25.9.2024-7.9.2025) at the Leipzig City History Museum. One focus of the show is socioculture and subculture, including the techno club culture of the 90s in Leipzig: posters, film footage and the steel door and bar of the former "Distillery" will be on display. In August, vinyl from Leipzig techno labels from a private collection will be added to the 90s display case.
