The story behind Aretha Franklin
With over 75 million records sold, it is not without reason that she is one of the most successful artists in the world. Aretha Franklin, the First Lady of Soul, has shaped an entire generation with her fantastic voice. She leaves behind a unique life's work full of highs and lows, which is allowed to shine once again on stage in the RESPECT tribute show.
Aretha Louise Franklin, born on March 25, 1942 in Memphis, Tennessee, became the undisputed "Queen of Soul" in the course of her outstanding career. Growing up in a musical family - her father was a well-known Baptist preacher and gospel musician - she released her first gospel LP at the age of 14. Despite or perhaps because of her difficult private life at a young age with two teenage pregnancies, the absence of her mother and her father's strict regiment, she switched to soul in the 60s.
Her No. 1 hit "Respect" became the anthem of the African-American civil rights movement, making Franklin an icon. 18 Grammys and countless chart hits later, she was the first woman to be inducted into the Rock'n'Roll Hall of Fame. She died of cancer in 2018 at the age of 76.
This show presents the most important stages of her career and gives a representative cross-section of her more than 50 years of musical work in a full-length and entertaining show - with video recordings and a high biographical and musical standard. Not only the biggest hits from the international charts will be interpreted by the top-class lead and backing vocalists with their own expressiveness and performance power. Aretha's lesser-known soul and gospel gems and her successful duets with other well-known stars such as George Michael, The Eurythmics and some of her many cover versions of big hits such as "Bridge Over Troubled Water" will also be presented. A ten-piece band guarantees the authentic sound of the time. And all with great respect and a deep bow to the immortal "First Lady of Soul".
