Ma and Guiying both lead isolated and troubled lives: Ma, a taciturn farmer, is the last unmarried member of his family; Guiying is disabled and infertile, and she is well past the usual age for marriage in rural China. In the arranged marriage between them, they meet as two strangers who are used to isolation and humiliation. Marriage could only make things worse, but for Ma and Guiying it becomes an opportunity. They discover their common destiny. They learn to allow closeness, to talk to each other, to care for each other and even to smile - despite the hard field work they do for a living and the challenges they have to overcome together.
Director Li Ruijun, who returned to his home village of Gaotai in the north-western Chinese province of Gansu for the shoot, focuses on exploitation, forced urbanization, poverty and the loss of traditions through uprooting. But above all, he is concerned with how his unsuspecting and vulnerable characters see the world. He loves and trusts them. A deeply human film of unobtrusive tenderness.
