The paths of two couples, one from the Viennese red-light milieu, the other from the Austrian provinces, cross when the Viennese couple robs a bank in the provincial town, which ends in tragedy. Afterwards, the bank robber seeks revenge, while the other couple's marriage is in crisis.

In clear tableaux, the film develops a morally complex and deeply effective picture of the inner and outer paths of its characters. Changes appear in small scenic details and precise dialogues, whereby the revenge story ultimately takes on hopeful, humanistic traits.
