Richard Long - Rhine Driftwood Line

Richard Long, one of the most important representatives of international Land Art, will be given a special exhibition space in the Rhineland with a central work: Rhine Driftwood Line will be on display from May 28 to September 7, 2025 in a presentation at KAI 10 | ARTHENA FOUNDATION at Kaistraße 14a in Düsseldorf that can only be viewed from the outside.

The approximately 40 square meter floor work was created in 2001 as part of an exhibition at the Museum Kurhaus Kleve. Long collected driftwood for it that had washed up in the last kilometer of the German Rhine before the Dutch border - a direct testimony to his process-based, site-specific way of working. The geometrically designed installation varies in its dimensions and follows a formal order specified by Long. The work was last exhibited in 2013 at the Museum DKM in Duisburg - the same venue where Long was awarded the renowned Wilhelm Lehmbruck Prize in 1996.

The renewed presentation was made possible by the purchase of the work by the Monika Schnetkamp Collection, which means that Rhine Driftwood Line will remain permanently in the Rhineland. This underlines Long's close connection to the region, which has grown not least through his long-standing collaboration with the Konrad Fischer Gallery.

The presentation in KAI 10 is part of the exhibition project Satellites, which was initiated by the Konrad Fischer Galerie on the occasion of Richard Long's 80th birthday. Peter Friese (former director of Weserburg Bremen, artistic director of Kunstverein Ruhr, Essen) will give the opening speech on May 27. Accompanying the exhibition in KAI 10, guided tours will be offered during which the space can be entered. The dates will be announced shortly.
