Program:
Ludwig van Beethoven: Violin Concerto in D major op. 61
Dmitri Shostakovich: Symphony No. 5 in D minor op. 47
The English Aurora Orchestra and its conductor Nicholas Collon don't care about conventions! In 2019, they provided a furious Musikfest finale when they played Hector Berlioz' Symphonie fantastique from memory standing up - and roused the audience in the Glocke to storms of enthusiasm. This could be dismissed as showmanship, but it is not! This music-making posture, which is extremely demanding for every member of the orchestra, inspires a shared spirit and enables agile, face-to-face eye contact. So here we go again with Shostakovich's Fifth Symphony! First performed in Leningrad in 1937, it was by no means a purely rehabilitative work after the composer had been subjected to harsh hostility because of his opera "Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk". Rather, with its ambiguity, it is regarded today as a subtle denunciation of the brutality of the Stalinist regime. The orchestra's risk-taking philosophy certainly suits the celebrated violinist Alena Baeva, whose magnetic presence and dynamic, energetic playing guarantee new perspectives on Beethoven's violin concerto!
