Robert Forster - best known as one half of the legendary Australian indie duo The Go-Betweens - can look back on an impressive solo career. This is based on tireless touring, his work as a writer ("Grant & I", "The Ten Rules of Rock'n'Roll") and his productivity in the studio. Strawberries is his ninth solo album - produced by Peter Morén (Peter, Björn & John) in Stockholm.

The eponymous idea was born in a vacation kitchen: an empty bowl of exceptionally good strawberries, a spontaneous song ("Someone ate all the strawberries") - and at the end a duet with his wife Karin Bäumler. However, Strawberries is not a personal diary album, but consists largely of observational, fictional character studies - "story songs", as Forster calls them.

Songs such as "All of the Time", "Breakfast on the Train" or "Foolish I Know" show him from a new, narrative side. His laconic style is combined with surprising musical elements - from rockabilly vibes and glam borrowings to free-spirited saxophone outbursts. The monumental finale "Diamonds" in particular, with its falsetto and jazz elements, blows away all expectations of the Forster sound.

The recordings in Stockholm with a local band followed a clear concept: arrive, rehearse, record, leave - all within a few weeks. The result is a multi-faceted album that bears Forster's signature and at the same time breaks new sonic ground. And as the artist himself says: "I love it when you think you know me - and then this last song comes along."
