Rodrigo Alcocer de Garay im Gespräch mit Hanar Hupka

Rodrigo Alcocer de Garay lives in Leipzig. He works with image archives, deals with analog and digital image cultures and explores the medium of photography using specially developed techniques. De Garay studied architecture and photography in Mexico and Germany. He completed his master's degree at the Academy of Visual Arts Leipzig in 2024.

His work Downtime can be seen in the exhibition Something Between Us. It consists of screenshots of camming platforms that are freely accessible on the internet. There, sex workers perform sexual acts in front of a running camera, which are broadcast live. Viewers can pay to get in touch with the cam models online. Rodrigo Alcocer de Garay takes the images at moments when the camming rooms are unoccupied. He transfers them from a screen to analog slides using a technique he developed himself. This method is based on contact exposure, as used in analog photography. The physical contact between image source and image carrier stands in contrast to the virtuality of the encounter between the users of camming platforms. On the one hand, the artist questions the relationship between photography and reality. On the other, he draws attention to the platform economy, in which human desire is marketed with the help of image-based technologies.

The event is a cooperation with the Initiative Fotostadt Leipzig

The Initiative Fotostadt Leipzig is an association of Leipzig cultural institutions and other cultural professionals. It has set itself the goal of consolidating the discourse on the topic of "Photography in/from Leipzig" through joint activities in order to make the tradition and present of the medium more visible in and outside the city. Current members are: Sandra Schubert/department of photography at the Hochschule für Grafik und Buchkunst, Christin Müller/freelance curator and author for photography, Museum der bildenden Künste, f/stop|D21 Kunstraum, Cihan Cakmak/freelance artist, GfZK - Galerie für Zeitgenössische Kunst.
