In 1630, the Doge of Venice began building the church of Santa Maria della Salute in the hope of putting an end to the plague raging in the city. Claudio Monteverdi, the chapel master at St. Mark's Cathedral, provided extraordinary settings of the mass text, of which the grandly life-affirming Credo has only survived as a fragment. In the performance by Musica Fiata and its vocal ensemble Capella Ducale, it is heard in its completed form, in which the "Trombe squarciate" reconstructed by Geert Jan van der Heider is also used.
