About the workshop:
Hip hop and house dance are dynamic urban dance styles that are deeply rooted in the history and culture of street and club dancing. Hip hop, which originated in the streets of New York in the 1970s, combines rhythmic movements with musical elements such as rap and DJing. It is a form of expression of freedom and community. House dance, which emerged in the clubs of Chicago and New York in the 1980s, combines fast footwork, rhythmic movements and a deep connection to house music.
In the context of a museum, a traditional place of high culture, an exciting interface is created between the world of urban subculture and the classical arts. Here, these seemingly contradictory worlds are brought together: Young people have the opportunity to express themselves artistically through the physical, rhythmic and creative elements of hip hop and house dance, while exploring the historical and aesthetic values of a museum.
Through the intensive workshops, they learn about the history and cultural roots of these dance styles while developing their own creativity and self-expression. In this way, the museum becomes a place of exchange, movement and artistic creation that appeals to young people at eye level and opens up new perspectives for them. Furthermore, the young people have the opportunity to get to know the Küppersmühle Museum with its unique architecture and diverse exhibits over the two weekends in March. This dialog between urban dance and modern art creates a new form of art education that blurs boundaries and creates space for new perspectives. The museum thus becomes a lively place where tradition and innovation meet.
What is RuhrKunstBewegt?
With RuhrKunstbewegt, the RuhrKunstMuseen are once again developing an educational program for children and young people. The current project strengthens the RuhrKunstMuseen network and intensifies cooperation with schools in the region as well as with children's and youth leisure facilities. Pupils of all ages and school types get to know the museum as a new place of experience and expand their skills through creative forms of expression. Approaches and formats of museum education and mediation are expanded in an interdisciplinary and cross-sectoral manner: approaches from theater, dance and music complement museum offerings in order to offer children and young people a variety of activating approaches to art and culture.
