In his masterpiece "Ausklang", Helmut Lachenmann approaches the piano sound as if with a magnifying glass. He transfers the characteristics of pianistic playing and the sound structures of the grand piano to the orchestra, which thus becomes a "super piano". The Rundfunk-Sinfonieorchester Berlin takes on this extraordinary role while Pierre-Laurent Aimard sits at the keys. Chief conductor Vladimir Jurowski also succeeds in sharpening the senses with the 11th Symphony by Dmitri Shostakovich. It bears the subtitle "The Year 1905" and, like much of the work of the composer, who was both controversial and celebrated in his home country during his lifetime, is far more than a personal commentary on Russian history.
