Urban development as an overall urban planning concept using the Düppelstraßenviertel as an example

This walk through the Düppelstraße district in Altona-Nord deals with the central guidelines of urban development and reform housing construction in the 1920s and how we deal with this legacy today.
Düppelstraße, Arnisstraße, Lunapark and Koldingstraße - between 1925 and 1929, a working-class residential area with clinker blocks of flats, spacious recreational areas and integrated modern public services was built here in a short space of time on previously undeveloped land. Examples include the Alsenpark, large sports fields and a Montessori children's home. In the middle of it all is the employment office on Kieler Straße, completed in 1927, which was recognized by the Reichsanstalt für Arbeitsvermittlung (Reich Employment Agency) as a model building for future employment office buildings throughout Germany in the same year. Partially destroyed in the Second World War, the apartment blocks were rebuilt or repaired as early as 1949, now partly with smaller apartment layouts.
Gustav Oelsner, building senator in Altona from 1924 to 1933, pursued ideas of a modern urban development policy for a good life for as many people as possible in the big city. Much of this can still be seen in the district today and has lost none of its relevance.
