Satoko Fujii's Tokyo Trio - an agile and quick-witted ensemble with the ability to create breathtaking dynamics and captivating intensity, but also delicate soundscapes and nuanced colors. The magical connection between Fujii and her Japanese collaborators Takashi Sugawa on bass and Ittetsu Takemura on drums gives the trio a unique sonic identity, imbued with "elegance, sophistication, surprise and invention" (S. Victor Aaron, Something Else! Reviews). With a deep understanding of the jazz tradition as their foundation, the Tokyo Trio fearlessly ventures down new and exciting sonic paths. The release of their debut album Moon on the Lake in 2021, captured at a live session at Tokyo's legendary Pit Inn, immediately catapulted the Tokyo Trio into the ranks of remarkable jazz formations - "a wonderfully present trio that speaks to us and will undoubtedly stand the test of time" (Grego Applegate Edwards, Gapplegate Music Review).

Critics and fans alike hail Fujii as one of the most original voices in jazz today. She is "a virtuoso piano improviser, an original composer and a bandleader who gets the best collaborators to deliver," says John Fordham in The Guardian. In concert and on more than 90 albums as bandleader or co-leader, she fuses jazz, contemporary classical, avant-rock and folk music into an innovative style that is instantly recognizable as her own. Over the years, Fujii has led some of the most consistently creative ensembles in modern improvisational music. As director of no less than five orchestras in the US, Germany and Japan, Fujii has also established herself as one of the world's leading composers for large jazz ensembles, prompting Cadence Magazine to call her "the Ellington of free jazz".
