Susanne, a young woman from Groß-Prüfening near Regensburg, wants to become famous. Against her mother's wishes, she joins the youth ballet, then the city theater's extras department. In the end, she even gets a tiny solo role in Mother Courage, is allowed to speak one sentence and dreams of a career as an actress. However, Susanne's resolute mother makes sure that she starts work as a typist in an insurance office after school.

After a year of office work, Susanne flees head over heels to Berlin. Here she finds shelter with Tina, a woman who used to work in the red-light district, now runs a hostel for failed existences and offers Susanne to live with her for the time being. Susanne keeps her head above water with small advertising jobs. By chance, she takes part in the casting show "let's tanz" and wins first prize, a trip to Capri. There she meets and falls in love with the screenwriter Jerry, who offers her a major role in a Hollywood remake of the Odyssey. Susanne seems to be at the peak of her career when fate takes a different turn.
