SCHMØKERN: Lesen an besonderen Orten in der Kunstinstallation GAIA in St. Katharinen

In the organizer's words:

Moin moin Schmøkernde,

For the eleventh part of our literature format, we invite you to read together in the middle of the GAIA art installation in St. Catherine's Church.

The world floats in St. Katharinen for 7 weeks and provides a unique view of our beautiful blue planet, as otherwise only astronauts experience it from space. "Gaia" [Greek for "Mother Earth"] is the name of the seven-metre installation by British artist Luke Jerram, a faithful replica of the Earth designed with NASA images.

Team Kirche will have hot and cold drinks and small snacks ready for you to make your reading time even more enjoyable.

After a joint welcome and a short introduction by Matthias Hausendorf on the art installation and the experiences with the changed church space, the reading time of one hour begins.

In keeping with this, we have a book table on site for all those who do not bring their own reading material and anyone else who is interested, matching the weekly theme of the installation on the subject of "Pausing, self-care and mindfulness". Together with the respective location, this forms the content bracket for our Flexible Schmøkern.

As this is only the eleventh "Flexibles Schmøkern" event, here is a brief explanation of what it actually means and how the format works:

We want to invite you to regular dates to read together in special places. As with mobile cinema, with "Schmøkern" we open up places for a shared experience. The Schmøkerners read from books they have brought with them or can use our book table.

Each "Schmøkern" has a thematic bracket, which is chosen by the location, the institution or for conceptual reasons. It is usually one evening a month at different locations.

Date Tuesday July 15, 2025

The meetings are free of charge. (a donation is welcome)

The schedule this time:

18:30 Admission (please be on time, as we would like to start the reading time together)

First there is time for a chat and a little refreshment and a look at the themed book table.

19:00 Welcome and short introduction

19:15 Start of reading time of one hour. During this time, all Schmøkernde delve into the books they have brought with them for an hour.

20:15 End of reading time

Finish until approx. 20:45

You are welcome to register for the events by simply replying to this email or sending an email to moin@flexiblesschmoekern.de.

If someone has not brought their own reading material: We will put together a small book table for each meeting of "Flexibles Schmøkern" - reading suitable for the location or topic, which can be used within the reading time as well.

We have been able to win the Cohen + Dobernigg bookshop as a cooperation partner. Yay, it's great that you're involved!

To the installation GAIA:

The world floats in St. Katharinen and provides a unique view of our beautiful blue planet, as otherwise only astronauts experience it from space. "Gaia" [Greek for "Mother Earth"] is the name of the seven-metre installation by British artist Luke Jerram, a faithful replica of the Earth designed with NASA images. An art installation that shows the beauty and vulnerability of our planet and is therefore anything but artificial. It has already hung in many places around the world.
