SCHMØKERN: Lesen an besonderen Orten in der Villa Mutzenbecher im Niendorfer Gehege

In the organizer's words:

Moin moin Schmøkernde,

our first anniversary - we are now already one year old. Thank you for all the guests and the shared enthusiasm for books, places and reading!

Villa Mutzenbecher is enchanted among the trees, deep in the Niendorfer Gehege. The forest has long since grown over the park that once surrounded the house. To Sunday excursionists, joggers and other visitors to Hamburg's popular local recreation area, the more than 100-year-old country house seemed to have sunk into a deep sleep, the demolition of which was prevented at the last minute.

For the twelfth part of our literary format, we invite you to read together in the middle of the Niendorfer Gehege. Villa Mutzenbecher has stood there since the beginning of the last century. Around this time, more and more people from Hamburg were drawn to rural Niendorf for "local recreation", which was still called "summer retreat" at the time.

The Villa team will have drinks ready for you to make your reading time even more enjoyable.

After a joint welcome and a presentation by Dr. Kay Flothow on the history and the challenges of preserving the listed building, the reading time of one hour begins.

This time, we have a book table on the topic of "Summer retreat - city dwellers in nature" on site for anyone who does not bring their own reading material and anyone interested. Together with the respective location, this forms the content bracket for our Flexible Schmøkern.

Here is a brief explanation of what "Flexible Schmøkern" actually means and how the format works:

We would like to invite you to regular dates to read together in special places. As with our mobile cinema, we open up places for a shared experience during "Schmøkern". The Schmøkerners read from books they have brought with them or can use our book table.

Each "Schmøkern" has a thematic bracket, which is chosen by the location, the institution or for conceptual reasons. It is usually one evening a month at different locations.

Date Tuesday August 5, 2025

The meetings are free of charge. (a donation is welcome)

The schedule this time:

18:30 Admission (please be on time, as we would like to start the reading time together)

We have been able to win the Cohen + Dobernigg bookshop as a cooperation partner. Yay, it's great that you're involved!

About the location: Villa Mutzenbecher:

The non-profit association "Werte erleben" was awarded the contract to use Villa Mutzenbecher as part of an expression of interest process by the City of Hamburg. The fact that the restoration of the dilapidated villa, which is a listed building, was to be carried out in collaboration with four vocational schools, the Eimsbüttel production school, HCU students, general education schools and craft businesses was convincing. The young people learned in real construction projects; they worked together with professionals from the trades; they were motivated and qualified for an apprenticeship in the building trade with a focus on monument conservation.

After temporary repairs due to the pandemic, Villa Mutzenbecher has been an educational and meeting place since 2022, focusing on district and city history, building trades, environmental education, democracy education, art, theater and music. Since then, the villa has become a creative workshop for all generations. The motto: The house is inviting - anyone with an idea that suits the house is welcome and can realize their own projects or events in the villa and make them accessible to the public.
