The worst-case scenario of every birthday party has happened: Even before the cake is finished, the topics of conversation run out and there is silence in the room. Unpleasant. We all know the inevitable fill-in-the-blank questions, the ice-breakers of getting to know each other, the exchanges about seemingly trivial matters. We know the rules of polite communication, which oscillates between approachability and distance, because we make small talk all the time.

But what exactly constitutes this specific moment of interpersonal interaction? The eleven players of the Over 65 Club jump into various everyday situations. They celebrate, drink bad wine, talk about the weather and take a close look at the superficial conversations we have with each other. Why can't we simply endure silence when there is nothing to say? At what point are we no longer strangers? And how do you actually behave while a birthday song is being sung?
