Behind the walls of the ocean

The world is submerged in water. The city center of Berlin has been spared within a gigantic wall. Five people live in it, five Eternals who show the Old World to visiting strangers every summer and pass on their knowledge. In winter, they are left to their own devices. If one of the two women and three men falls ill or grows old, they disappear and a child with the same name and appearance arrives in the city.

Until one of the Eternals wants to break the cycle.

What will remain of Fortress Europe? How is history handed down? Who is cast out, who is chosen? When will these roles be reversed? When do we decide to flee? Behind the Walls of the Ocean is an archaic, post-apocalyptic story about isolation and emancipation.

/// Anne Reinecke was born in Meißen in 1978. In 1984, her parents moved with her to West Germany, where she grew up near Heidelberg.
She has lived in Berlin since the late 90s. Here she studied art history and literature and worked for various theater, film and exhibition projects as well as a city guide before her debut novel Leinsee was published by Diogenes Verlag in 2018. This was followed in 2024 by Hinter den Mauern der Ozean, also published by Diogenes.
