If you mention to older queers anywhere in Germany that you're from Darmstadt, some people's eyes light up: "I used to go to the Schlosskeller on Sundays!" they say. Since the 1980s, generations of queer people in the Rhine-Main region and beyond have partied at the "gay and lesbian disco". No one minded that the party always took place on a Sunday evening and meant a hangover the next day in lectures or at work. It was simply too worthwhile. For years, the scene magazine GAB often included the note: "Student audience. High proportion of lesbians". That was both a warning and a promise. At a time when there weren't many free spaces for lesbians, gays, bisexuals and trans people, the Schlosskeller was an early homosexual pilgrimage site. With over 40 years under its belt, the "S&L" is one of the oldest gay parties in the universe, but has always remained young. Following in the footsteps of Madonna, Beyoncé and Cher, the party has constantly reinvented itself. The biggest makeover took place in 2011: the gay and lesbian party became "Schrill und Laut", Sunday became Friday and friendship became love: since then, the Schlosskeller and vielbunt have been joint organizers and plan every party with dedication and attention to detail, and every now and then there are events that surprise even regular guests. For everyone else too, Schrill und Laut is simply life-changing: otherwise quiet minds go into ecstasy on the dancefloor and many a heterosexual guest has a revival experience in the Schlosskeller. The third Friday of the month remains the highlight for queers & friends who want to dance, meet people and party. At Schrill und Laut, you can find love for life - or for one night.
