Science Night: Von Herodot bis Assassin's Creed

Pyramids, pharaohs, mysterious hieroglyphics: Ancient Egypt has fascinated mankind for thousands of years. Even ancient authors such as Herodotus and Diodorus tried to get to the bottom of this enigmatic land - often with more imagination than facts.

The lecture takes you on an exciting journey through the history of Egyptian enthusiasm: from the first reports of ancient writers to Napoleon's expedition and modern pop culture phenomena such as Assassin's Creed. It's not just about historical facts, but also about how the image of ancient Egypt has changed over the course of time - and why it continues to fascinate us to this day.

About our experts

Roxane Bicker (dey/deren) has a degree in Egyptology, Coptology and Pre- and Early History.
early history. Since 2005, dey have been working at the State Museum of Egyptian Art in Munich, where dey are responsible for cultural education. Roxane Bicker is particularly interested in ancient Egypt in modern pop culture. Dey is a board member of the German "Association of Egyptology". Roxane Bicker also works as an author and has written several short stories and novels, including the trilogy "The Lords of the Jackal".

Nora Kuch studied Egyptology, Pre- and Early History and Classical Archaeology at the University of Heidelberg. She completed her doctorate in Egyptology at the University of Vienna on the deliberate breaking and depositing of stone vessels as an early dynastic burial practice. Her research interests are therefore predynastic archaeology, ritual studies and methodology. After a scientific traineeship in three different state museums in Munich, she is now employed at the State Museum of Egyptian Art in the project "kultur.digital.strategie".

Nora and Roxane met for the first time at the State Museum of Egyptian Art and it was a perfect match: they realized that they had a common interest in films, books and nerd culture. So they decided to found the edutainment podcast "Mummies & Magic - Ancient Egypt in Pop Culture".
