Screening-Abend mit Original Filmmaterial des Deutschen Rundfunk Archiv (DRA) in der Ausstellung "SWIM* - Die Suche nach Paradiesen" in der Galerie im Turm

In the organizer's words:

Screening evening with original film material from the German Broadcasting Archive (DRA) - March 19, 25, 19:00-21:00

With SWIM*-the search for paradises the Galerie im Turm presents a duo exhibition by Kristin Wenzel & Helena Doppelbauer from 23.01.-27.04.25. As part of the series *swim, sweat, fight - the search for paradises - spaces, bodies and politics of leisure at the Sport- und Erholungszentrum (SEZ) in Berlin-Friedrichshain.

Surrounded by construction fences, the Sports and Recreation Center (SEZ) is located on the edge of Volkspark Friedrichshain. It was one of the most important projects of the GDR and had millions of visitors. Now its demolition is planned. With the SEZ, a place that is associated with many memories, longings and passions will also disappear. An artificial paradise made by people for people, described by visitors as a spectacle and a pearl. The swimming and bathing area is particularly impressive: large, organically shaped pools that are connected by cascades and imitate faraway places in the South Seas.

SWIM* immerses you in this world of swimming, movement and water. Into their structural forms, but also into the associated emotional and metaphorical references: being in the water, weightlessness and fluidity and their connection to the most diverse practices and feelings of people, as well as blurring and forgetting.

The multi-part exhibition series 'swim, sweat, fight - the search for paradises' explores traces of the past and present along three central places of longing in the former SEZ: the water and swimming landscape (swim), the sauna (sweat) and the martial arts studio (fight). Metaphorically, references are made to planned, self-created and contested artificial paradises, which develop into a search for social infrastructures and open places of collective leisure in the city.
