High-energy jazz with depth
"Electric Stories" - the new album by Düsseldorf jazz pianist Sebastian Gahler
Following the huge success of his Haruki Murakami-inspired album "Two Moons" (2022) - with over 10 million streams - Düsseldorf jazz pianist Sebastian Gahler is releasing his next album just two years later. "Electric Stories" offers groove-based high-energy jazz with depth and underlines Gahler's self-image as a versatile musical storyteller.
Gahler goes electric
The sound setting is based on the electro, funk and fusion jazz of the 1960s and 70s, in which Gahler locates his musical roots, and traces role models such as Herbie Hancock's groundbreaking album "Head Hunters" (1973). To do this, Gahler switches from the classic grand piano to a castle of vintage keyboards. He combines the bell-like tones of a Fender Rhodes with the crisp punch of a Wurlitzer electric piano, mixes the floating vibrato of a Hammond B-3 organ with the warm lead sounds of a Moog synthesizer and adds the icing on the cake with the silvery sound of a Hohner String Performer.
With star trombonist Andy Hunter to new worlds of sound
The electromechanical keyboard quintet is completed by a top-class quintet of exceptional musicians: Niklas Schneider on drumset, Nico Brandenburg on electric bass, Martin Feske on electric guitar and - as a guest on five tracks - Denis Gäbel from the HR Big Band on tenor saxophone. A special highlight: Gahler was able to secure the renowned New York jazz trombonist Andy Hunter as a featured artist for his Electric Project. Hunter, who has already toured the world with Snarky Puppy, Richard Bona and the Mingus Big Band, is currently a permanent ensemble member of the WDR Big Band in Cologne. So it wasn't far to the Maarweg studios in Cologne, whose vintage equipment provided the perfect resonance chamber for the eleven tracks recorded live on "Electric Stories".
Electric Stories" not only closes the circle to the electro-jazz of the 70s, but also to Sebastian Gahler's own musical work: What began with the "Funky Vibes" concert series in the
