SELMA SELMAN. FLOWERS OF LIFE

SELMAN'S ART DEALS IMPRESSIVELY WITH EXPERIENCES OF DISCRIMINATION, VIOLENCE, SEXISM AND PATRIARCHY IN VARIOUS MEDIA

The SCHIRN is dedicating a major solo exhibition to the artist Selma Selman (*1991). Only a few years ago, she confidently and powerfully entered the international art world and describes herself as the "most dangerous woman in the world". Together with her family, Selman cannibalizes former status symbols such as Mercedes-Benz cars in front of an audience in order to get hold of the few precious metals that are still usable. The linguistic performances of the artist with a Roma background are also usually loud and forceful, expressing anger and the urge to reverse power relations. Selman's art deals impressively with experiences of discrimination, violence, sexism and patriarchy in various media. Her multifaceted work includes performances, sculptures, paintings on car parts and scrap metal, drawings and video. At the SCHIRN, the artist is presenting prints, small sculptural works made of precious metals and two performances that take up central aspects of her oeuvre, as well as two newly developed works. The installation "Flowers of Life" (2024) made of clamshells refers to her family's livelihood, which is based on collecting and reselling scrap metal. The video work "Crossing the Blue Bridge" (2024) is based on her mother's memories of experiences in her home town of Bihać during the Bosnian War (1992-1995). Selman takes these family experiences as a starting point to situate herself as a feminist-activist artist who today campaigns internationally for her community. Selma Selman comes from Bosnia and Herzegovina and lives and works in New York, Amsterdam and Bihać.
