Sheherazaad

[Sheherazaad is an American artist and composer whose contemporary folk-pop synthesis is part of the new wave of South Asian diasporic soundscapes. After releasing her acclaimed debut single "Mashoor" for Erased Tapes last fall, Sheherazaad released her LP "Qasr" on March 1st.

Raised in the San Francisco Bay Area as part of a second-generation immigrant family, Sheherazaad combines Western classical music with South Asian sound traditions. Her modern vocals, which touch on various genres, can be described as alternative folk or experimental ballad. Her lyrics modernize classical Hindi-Urdu poems and deal with themes of displacement, mother tongue, imagined homeland and beyond.

With "Qasr", Sheherazaad takes us into a fascinating, novel world of sound - a musical realm that seems almost otherworldly. At the same time, she gives the nomadic experience a powerful presence and invites us to create our own fortresses, our own sonic kingdoms and impossible dream worlds.
