Woodblock prints in the 20th century
Although almost as old as the woodcut itself, the far more elaborate color woodcut rarely managed to conquer the stage on its own. Yet it is precisely the colorful prints of the 20th century that show the unique expressive power inherent in the reproductive medium. Impressed by the precise color technique of Japanese ukiyo-e, influenced by the new naturalness of Paul Gauguin's prints and revived by the Expressionists, the printing ink increasingly developed into an independent form within the exploration of the artistic practice of relief printing.
The exhibition shows developments in color woodblock printing in the 20th century on two floors of the Spendhaus. Alongside works by Paul Gauguin, Emil Orlik, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner and Pablo Picasso, color woodcuts by Robert Mangold, Jörg Immendorff and Jonathan Meese from the holdings of the Reutlingen Municipal Art Collection can be discovered.
