KIOSK AND CONSUMPTION

Späti in Berlin, Trinkhalle in the Ruhr region, Bude, Kiosk, Wasserhäuschen in Hesse. What can a kiosk do? The sale of snacks and drinks, magazines and newspapers, tobacco products, lottery and scratch cards, coffee and snacks, sometimes telephones and tickets or everyday necessities - above all, kiosks are places where people meet and exchange ideas and are therefore more than just places of sale.

Kiosks have a social function. They are a meeting place for the neighborhood, a place for spontaneous encounters, a supply for people with little time or fixed working hours, support for the elderly or less mobile people. And, of course, the kiosk also has a cultural significance: in Berlin, the "Späti" is part of the urban culture and is seen as an integral part of the cityscape; in the Ruhr area, drinking halls are not just sales outlets, but places where people chat, discuss and sometimes even watch soccer. The kiosk is also a social glue for certain groups, e.g. young people in Cologne's Brussels district use the kiosk as a meeting place before moving on.

We will show you films - from socially critical to humorous - in which the world and function of the kiosk plays a role and enriches our everyday lives.

In March Short Monday, we will be exploring the topic of kiosks and consumption on the occasion of the upcoming exhibition at the Photographische Sammlung / SK Stiftung Kultur Tata Ronkholz: Gestaltete Welt. A retrospective. Ronkholz became known for her series of kiosks and drinking halls as well as smaller stores from the Rhineland and Ruhr region, which she began in 1977.

The Kiosk (CH, 2013, Anete Melece, Animation, 7')
The Kiosk by Anete Melece was chosen as the Swiss "Best Animated Film" 2014. The short film tells the story of the everyday life of Olga, a kiosk woman who is literally stuck in her kiosk and in a monotonous life. Various coincidences finally bring her to the place of her dreams...

Trinkhalle in Holten - Wat'n herrliches Ruhrgebiet (D, 2005, Volker Köster, TV report, 3')
The day of the drinking halls in the Ruhr area, a great idea, our stalls are simply cult. This episode is from a 2005 film, shot at Holtener Markt. Philosophical conversations before breakfast. "Holten is the shirt and the Ruhr is the jacket", there's no better way to describe the region.

ENGIN - Kiosk Yüksel (D, 2023, Jan Hillmann, music video, 4')
"You don't get what you want, you get what you need here. Leave some change here, take love out with you."

Waldmeister (D, 2007, Markus Mischkowski/ Kai Maria Steinkühler, feature film, 9')
The two long-term unemployed film heroes Mike and Alfred are involved in a measure to integrate them into the job market. They are supposed to clear the city's green spaces and forests of garbage. But the market for forest waste is now hotly contested. Time for a briefing at the kiosk in the former Clouth works in Cologne Nippes.

KOD COŠKA (CH/SB, 2013, Corina Schwingruber Ilic / Nikola Ilic, 15')
Whether beer, cigarettes or margarine, the village kiosk in Sirca has it all. It is the meeting place for those who did not emigrate. No work, no money, but lots of humor and brotherhood.

Tripe with onions - original title: Szalontüdö (HUN, 2006, Márton Szirmai, feature film, 7')
A delicious meal from the old days meets two people. They seem to understand each other - even without words.

Um musical - A Musical (BRA, 2017, Tarcísio Lara Puiati, 4')
Proof that a kiosk can fulfill its function even when it's already closed.

The guy who just wanted to smoke (D, 2024, Stella Hood, animated film, 2:30 min.)
He just wants to smoke, but the rain makes the wet cigarette less tempting. In search of a kiosk, he runs past strange creatures that attack him. Unimpressed, he ignores them, which defeats them. Arriving at the distant kiosk, the shelf is empty.
