Shuteen Erdenebaatar Quartet

In the organizer's words:

5th Grand Piano Week

"People at the piano find it harder than others to sound the way they are, and then in such a way that everyone else recognizes them immediately. Shuteen Erdenebaatar is one of the pianists who have achieved this." - Süddeutsche Zeitung (DE)

Born in the Mongolian capital Ulaanbaatar, composer and pianist Shuteen Erdenebaatar (*1998) creates a unique sound with her yearning melodies, enriched with profound and expressive harmonies and rhythms. Having grown up as a classical musician, she began her bachelor's degree in classical composition at the age of 16.

At the age of 25, Shuteen Erdenebaatar has already won the prestigious German Jazz Award 2024, the biggest Mongolian cultural award "Mungun Mod" 2024, the BMW Young Artist Jazz Award 2022, 1st prize and the audience award at the legendary Young Munich Jazz Award, the Music Scholarship of the City of Munich 2022 and the Composition Prize at the Biberacher Preis 2022 and 1st prize at the Kurt Maas Jazz Award 2021. During her studies she was a scholarship holder of the Orlandus Lassus Foundation and the DAAD, currently she is a scholarship holder of the Concerto 21 Foundation.

She currently conducts and writes for three world-class ensembles: her hard swinging yet sensitive quartet, her exquisite duo Lightville and her unique 20-piece cross-genre Chamber Jazz Orchestra.

In 2023, she signed a three-album deal with the multi-Grammy award-winning New York label Motema Music, which includes all three of her current projects. The first album Rising Sun with her quartet was released on September 15, 2023. The album caused a sensation in the trade press and among audiences worldwide and Shuteen Erdenebaatar has been touring successfully since the album's release, with around 70 dates at home and abroad. The second album, a duo album with Nils Kugelmann, is currently being planned and will be released in fall 2025.
