In the future, there are no more plants on earth. The last of their kind are in a spaceship flying through the infinite vastness of space. There, astronaut Freeman Lowell is dedicated to looking after his precious cargo. But then he receives an order to destroy the plant life.

Directed by visual effects pioneer Douglas Trumbull (2001, BLADE RUNNER), SILENT RUNNING is one of the first science fiction films to deal with ecological issues. With its hippiesque main character and the moving soundtrack by Joan Baez, the film clearly shows its time of origin, yet the unequal balance of power between environmental protection and big business is more topical than ever. As the conclusion of our series, the film takes a utopian look into a future in its own way - a future that may not necessarily depend on humanity.
