SCHIKANE
Jörg Schippa - guitar
Nikolaus Neuser - trumpet
Denis Stilke - drums
Wolf Kampmann in Jazzthing 23:
The first bite must not be salad" is the title of the first album by the band "Schikane" with guitarist Jörg Schippa, trumpeter Nikolaus Neuser and drummer Denis Stilke. Their rebellious patchwork jazz is reminiscent of the late 1980s and early 1990s, when stylistic breaks, abrupt changes in tempo and timbre and jumping back and forth between different reference systems were the order of the day. This lively album is great fun, not only because you obviously share it with the musicians, but also because you never know what awaits you around the next bend. Wolf Kampman/Jazzthing 11/23

"Jazz with Turkish, Moroccan and Indian melodies"
In November, we welcome one of the veterans of Berlin's contemporary jazz scene to the stage of the Brotfabrik: saxophonist Dirk Engelhardt. His entry into professional jazz began with his studies in West Berlin at the University of the Arts. In the rather bizarre and creative era of 1980-1988, he was a member of such diverse bands as the noise/art rock/new wave/or so formation "Leningrad Sandwich" around the later "Tresor" founder Dimitri Hegemann as well as Bardo Henning's avant-garde big band "Experimenti Berlin". He played with the latter at numerous national and international festivals such as Jazzfest Berlin, Donaueschinger Musiktage, Pori/Finland and many more. His own project "Lilo" resulted from his collaboration with the pianist Ludwig Endesfelder, who had left East Berlin and with whom he played in West Germany, France (Nancy Jazz Pulsations), Poland (Jazz Nad Odra) and also a concert with Albert Mangelsdorff. Dirk Engelhardt played in Berlin in squats in Kreuzberg, on the street and in endless sessions at Tacheles, Frannz Club, Acud and Quasimodo. He played with Gebhard Ullmann and even before reunification with the Polish drummer Jacek Pelc. He lived in New York and Paris, where he became intensively involved with the music of the African continent, from which the "Radio Marrakesh" project emerged. He was also a member of the band "Embryo". So we are very much looking forward to Dirk Engelhardt and his ensemble.

FUNNELL/SCHEIDT/HERTENSTEIN/HORII
Jim Funnell - piano
Holger Scheidt - bass
Joe Hertenstein - drums
Akiko Horii - percussion
The great American jazz pianist Jim Funnell is coming to Berlin to Kubiz Raoul Wallenberg in Weissensee (streetcar stop M4 or 12, very close to the lake) to present his new album "Word Out". We are very much looking forward to it:
"Word Out" is a musical adventure unfolding from within, a place where speech is often inadequate, where experiences are unsayable... Silence, sounds and rhythms, on the other hand, can sometimes reveal far more: Jim's unique strand of jazz, tinged with elements of classical and world music, will take you to the fringes of post-bop (Live in Japan), fusion (Bitcorn Soup) and even, at times, microtonal territories (Aquarius Funk)."

BUBU - Recordrelease
Paul Engelmann - sax
Ben Lehmann - bass
Martial Frenzel - drums
The trio "Bubu" sees itself in the tradition of acoustic jazz of the 50s and 60s. Of course, there are no limits, neither in compositions nor in free improvisations. Pieces from their own pen are presented, sometimes upbeat and cheerful, sometimes pensive and melancholy, sometimes heavy. Much is not taken particularly seriously, while others are taken too seriously.
In short, all friends of communicative music should get their money's worth.

PINA BERLIN...sings Turkish Standards
On December 12, Pina Berlin goes "Back to the Roots", because the singer-songwriter's musical roots lie in both Turkish music and jazz. Pina Berlin, the alter ego of musician and Berliner-by-choice Pinar Tatlikazan, accompanies her on her journey to realize her dream: To touch people through music, to capture emotions in sounds and to create connections. If you are wondering what Turkish jazz is, come to the Brotfabrik on 12.12.24 and experience Pina Berlin live with her international trio of Berlin jazz musicians.
Combined with elements of jazz music, you can expect an eclectic mix: from singer-songwriter anthems of the 80s to the psychedelic rock of the 70s to folk standards and modern tango. She also uses loops and effects to expand the sonic possibilities, pushing the boundaries of traditional sound and creating a multi-faceted listening experience.
More about Pinar Tatlikazan:
Pinar Tatlikazan is a singer, songwriter and vocal teacher, born in Bursa, raised in Istanbul and living in Berlin since 2010. Her musical journey began with classical vocal training in Istanbul, followed by studies with renowned jazz musicians in Berlin, Istanbul and Massachusetts. In addition to her voice, she also masters the saxophone and ukulele. Under her stage name "Pina Berlin", she has released seven singles and one album, which have been nominated several times. In her songs, she explores themes such as human interaction and self-discovery, striking a balance between self-reflection and motivational messages.
Fusing different cultural influences and musical genres, Pinar seeks to infuse her music with empathy, positivity and hope - in the midst of a hectic world characterized by individualism. Her path to music, however, was unconventional: she initially studied architecture in Berlin and led a double life until a burnout and the onset of fibromyalgia forced her to recognize her true calling. She decided to pursue music and has since worked with renowned musicians and performed on prestigious stages in Berlin and Istanbul.
She is currently pursuing her dream and studying "Music and Movement - Rhythmics" at the Berlin University of the Arts, majoring in jazz singing. Here she explores the connection between music and movement, which she discovered for herself through her health journey, in an experimental and improvisational context.
