John "Divine G" Whitfield (Colman Domingo) is imprisoned in Sing Sing maximum security prison for a murder he didn't commit. The only bright spot in his dreary prison life is the theater program, where he can give free rein to his creativity on stage. But the balance of the theater troupe is shaken when the unpredictable Clarence "Divine Eye" Maclin (playing himself) appears. He has his own artistic ideas and wants to stage a comedy. Based on true events.
