John Whitfield has been sitting innocently in prison for many years. He was convicted of a murder he did not commit. In prison, he has joined a theater group that puts on a play every six months. John is the star of the troupe, he acts, writes plays and is involved in all the important decisions. But a newcomer, the gifted gangster "Divine Eye", challenges these established and proven structures and ensures that a wild, anarchic time-travel comedy is put on stage instead of the intended drama. During rehearsals, John has to testify before a committee that will decide on his early pardon. When its members are unsure whether they are not "victims" of John's great acting skills, his world collapses.

The story told in "Sing Sing" is based on facts. The RTA program (RTA stands for "Rehabilitation through the Arts") has been successfully implemented in American prisons for many years.
