Slater Bradley: DRAGONSLAYER | Parochialkirche Berlin

In the organizer's words:

With DRAGONSLAYER, US conceptual and multimedia artist Slater Bradley is showing his latest immersive installation in the listed Parochial Church in Berlin-Mitte.

DRAGONSLAYER is a further development of Bradley's installation SUNDOOR, which consisted of an 888-piece rose quartz labyrinth and was on display in the Church of Santa Maria Maddalena during the 2017 Venice Biennale. With the title DRAGONSLAYER, the artist refers both to the iconographic representations of the Archangel Michael and St. George - primal scenes that stand for personal transformation and the triumph of light over darkness - and to the alchemical heritage of the church's location.

At the center of the installation is the "dragon" - a walk-through crystal labyrinth measuring eight meters in diameter and consisting of a total of 1,200 kilograms of honey calcite and chevron amethyst crystals. Bradley conceived this labyrinth as an energetic field that creates a free vortex of energy. This effect is enhanced by the alignment of the panels, creating an immersive experience between matter and immaterial energy.

A sound composition specially developed for DRAGONSLAYER by Dustin O'Halloran, the multi-award-winning composer, pianist and long-time companion of the artist, merges visual art, architecture and music into an overall experience in DRAGONSLAYER.

On Sundays, carillonneur Anna Kasprzycka will perform free improvisations to Dustin O'Halloran's music on the church's carillon. She uses the full sound spectrum of the fifty-two bells in the church tower and allows DRAGONSLAYER to radiate acoustically beyond the walls of the church into the heart of the city.
