In his solo directorial debut, painter Albert Oehlen sets a visual exclamation mark right from the start: A corkscrew bores into an eyeball, a splatter parody of perhaps the most famous shot from Luis Buñuel and Salvador Dali's surrealist classic "An Andalusian Dog". This opening draws the audience into the protagonist's artistic subconscious, so to speak. In the following 80-minute mockumentary, Udo Kier plays the painter Albert Oehlen - while Kim Gordon can be heard as his inner voice. The everyday life of an exceptional artist is explored with a great deal of self-irony. Oehlen weaves truth and fantasy into a surprisingly funny and provocative self-dismantling.

BAD PAINTER celebrated its world premiere at the 54th International Film Festival Rotterdam. FILM FESTIVAL COLOGNE is delighted to be able to present the German premiere in the presence of the film team as part of the Cologne Cinema Nights!
