A hot, sun-drenched summer at Elio's parents' country estate in northern Italy in 1983. The 17-year-old listens to music and reads books, goes swimming and is bored, until one day his father's new assistant arrives from America at the spacious villa. The charming Oliver, who like Elio has Jewish roots, is young, self-confident and handsome. At first, Elio reacts rather coldly and defensively to him, but soon the two of them are taking frequent outings together and Elio begins to make hesitant advances that become increasingly intimate - even if, as Oliver says, "you can't talk about such things". The attraction between the two becomes more and more intense over the course of the short summer.
