An undercover agent is infiltrated into a surfing clique that practises bank robberies for sport.
The young FBI agent Johnny Utah (Keanu Reeves) is infiltrated into the L.A. surfing scene, where he is sent undercover to investigate a series of bank robberies. He quickly forms a close bond with Bodhi (Patrick Swayze), the charismatic leader of a clique that is probably involved in the robberies. However, Johnny increasingly identifies with the group's lifestyle and finds himself in a conflict of conscience.
Director Kathryn Bigelow ("Near Dark") scored a hit in the early 1990s with her gripping, multi-layered action film, which follows an adrenaline-addicted group of surfers led by Patrick Swayze ("Dirty Dancing") in perfectly captured images by Donald Peterman.
