Cinema Quadrat and Kunsthalle Mannheim are showing the biopic about the action painter Jackson Pollock as part of the "Film & Art" series:

Jackson Pollock was the founder of action painting: he focused on the production process of the artwork - he created some of his paintings using furious, dance-like movements in which he hurled the paint from a container onto a canvas spread out on the floor. Ed Harris, who also directed the film and took on the leading role with full physical commitment, paints a vivid portrait of this abstract expressionist artist, who became a star in the early 1950s and died in a car accident in 1956. The painter not only influenced the art of his home country, but also the European scene in the post-war years.
Alcoholism and psychological problems led to him destroying many of his works himself. The film shows the ambivalent personality of the painter, who owes his success not least to his partner Lee Krasner, played excellently by Marcia Gay Harden. Characters such as the collector Peggy Guggenheim, the art critic Clement Greenberg and the artist Willem de Kooning convey an important chapter of American art history in the course of the film - "told with great sensitivity, dedication and unobtrusive images."
