"They're coming to get you, Barbra!" - The horror begins in the very first minutes. Barbra visits her parents' grave with her brother, the dead rise from the earth and she is catapulted from her quiet, middle-class life into hell in one fell swoop. Alone and completely distraught, she meets Ben - one of the first African-American heroes in US film history. They flee to a remote farmhouse, which is soon besieged by the undead...
George A. Romero can be regarded as the father of zombies. With THE NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD, he made a style-defining shocker that reinvented the horror genre in one fell swoop, with weird camera angles, claustrophobic sound effects, suggestive plays of light and shadow, previously unseen bloody effects scenes and radical uncompromisingness. One of the best and most frightening horror films, a standard of midnight screenings in the 70s, the film is also regarded as an expression of social conflicts ranging from the civil rights movement to the Vietnam War. In 1999, it was added to the National Film Registry by the US Library of Congress for its cultural relevance.
