»Songs of Rising and Sinking« Konzertabend zum Weltwassertag

In the organizer's words:

About the evening:

Bremen is built close to the water. Storm surges and floods have always been part of the city's history. The effects of the climate catastrophe are bringing the situation to a head - will we soon be drowning? Over the course of a year, five composers have developed pieces with Schwankcore - the Schwankhalle's own choir - that are dedicated to the ecological, social and emotional consequences of this increasing threat.

Followed by (20:00) panel talk "Embrace the Transformation"

With "When We Were Singking" (premiere 19.4.2024), Hamburg-based music theater maker and composer Daniel Dominguez Teruel created a kind of requiem for the sinking city of Bremen by asking the singers of Schwankcore: Which songs would we sing before we sink? Alex Franz Zehetbauer, sound choreographer and performance artist (New York / Vienna), contributed the piece "Water Stories" (premiere 15.6.2024) - a melancholy ode to a watery future. Composer and Schwankcore director Mara Hebel created a surreal underwater soundscape with "Über das Wasser" (premiere Sat 30.11.), in which the tranquillity of submersion and the cohesion of a human community resonate as hopeful facets. Inspired by the expressive forms of climate activism, composer Eloain Lovis Hübner explored the voice as a medium of protest in "deckung (versuch2)" (premiere 31.1.2025) and staged the Schwankcore in a scenic-musical action.

The last composition in the "Songs of Rising and Sinking" series is by multidisciplinary Berlin artist Doreen Kutzke, who teaches advanced singing techniques and spiritual vocal practices as founder of the Kreuzberg Yodeling School, among other things. In the piece "Wasser kommt, Wasser geht, nur der Fluss versteht" (Water comes, water goes, only the river understands), she turns the Schwankcore into the voice of the Weser. Recordings of the changing course of the Weser are used as the basis for the notation. Flood levels and river changes, bad and good news from the river are visualized and sung simultaneously.
