Sonntagsfilm um vier - Der Mann, der nie im All war

The man who was never in space - documentary film (D, 2023), followed by a discussion with director Tom Lemke

The man who was never in space. This man is Tasillo. He lives and works in Mittweida, a small town in Saxony. Here, in an inconspicuous house, Tasillo has created something that is unique for the town, the region and far beyond: the largest private space collection in the world. The man who has never been into space lives for his world, space travel, outer space, the universe. This is exactly what his heart beats for, and he is infinitely strong and dedicated to it. He dedicates every moment of his life to his passion; happy and content.
He has collected 100,000 exhibits over many decades. There is a story for every glove and helmet, for the many photos, signatures, rockets and components; and Tasillo can tell it, because it is always his story too. But what happens when he leaves? At the age of 67, he wants to hand over his life's work, but his home town of Mittweida can do little with the collection. And so begins his journey to find a new home for his collection and his life story and to record what he has experienced. Tom Lemke accompanied Tasillo on this journey for several years. With long takes and a visual aesthetic that is flattering to Soviet space travel, he portrays a man who
who single-mindedly pursues his idea but at the same time still carries his passion for space travel through his life with almost childlike curiosity and joy. A story about the power of dreams and how difficult it sometimes is to hold on to one's own stories.
