SOSHIRO MATSUBARA: SLEEVES OF DESIRE

In the organizer's words:

Using installation, ceramics, painting, drawing and sculpture, Japanese artist Soshiro Matsubara creates magical interiors that take a personal look into the depths of human emotional states: His fantastic environments address intoxication, obsessiveness, longing and kinks using found objects, his own artworks and historical anecdotes. They question perception, memory and constructions of identity. In doing so, they combine black humor, sophisticated art historical references, the aesthetics of dandyism and iconographic eccentricity. Through built structures and architectural interventions, Matsubara plays with the emotional and psychological relationship to space and personal memory.

For the Dortmunder Kunstverein, the artist is developing an extensive new installation that responds to the Kunstverein's glass architecture and spiral staircase. His playful approach to space will merge the interior and exterior of the fully visible exhibition space, allowing him to elaborate his narrative with objects and images in his most extensive institutional solo exhibition to date.

Soshiro Matsubara (*1980 in Hokkaido, lives in Vienna) studied at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna and has been represented in exhibitions at MOCO - Museum of Contemporary Art, Rome (2021) and FRAC Lorraine, Metz (2024), among others.
