Kiosk Session // Jazziyat

In the organizer's words:

JazzIyat - in Arabic this means "in jazz style". And so the new Hanoverian band combines two fascinating musical traditions from different corners of the world. Traditional Arabic and oriental music meet jazz standards and influence each other. This exciting encounter creates a sound that presents both musical traditions in a fresh, contemporary light.

The music of John Coltrane meets the songs of the great Egyptian singer Umm Kulthum, Miles Davis' "Nardis" is combined with traditional oud melodies. Jazzlyat also breaks new ground in terms of instrumentation. Cello, piano and oud are both melody instruments and part of the rhythm section, which is carried by riq, daf and drum set. The five musicians of Jazzlyat explore new musical terrain with a joy of playing and experimenting. The element of improvisation, an important component of both musical cultures, is always the starting point of this intercultural research trip.
