Soundtrip #72: Almut Kühne & Joke Lanz

In the beginning, improvised music was a kind of liberation - wild, raw, unbound. Today it is a polyphonic cosmos: a field of personal styles and sound languages that is constantly changing and growing. With Soundtrips NRW, we are opening up this space and inviting international guests - to intimate encounters, close to the ear, in the middle of the moment.

In the first set, two radical sound explorers meet: Almut Kühne (voice) and Joke Lanz (turntables) play as a duo for the first time, having wowed audiences at international festivals such as Willisau, Saalfelden, Moers and Porto Jazz since 2020 together with Alfred Vogel as the trio HOW NOISY ARE THE ROOMS? Kühne and Lanz draw their Dadaist joy of playing from the full: autonomous sound cells, fragmented scraps of speech, fragile vocal lines and ground-up beats condense into a feverish rush of sound. Their performances are pure energy - hard to grasp, impossible to categorize.

In the second set, the two open up their world of sound to new encounters: They are joined by Jonathan Hofmeister (synthesizer, piano) and Matthias Schuller (trombone) - two distinguished voices on the young improv scene who respond to the duo with open ears and sensitive presence. Together they create a collective moment, raw, poetic, immediate.

An evening between escalation and silence, between sound adventure and subtle intimacy - a sound trip in the best sense of the word.
