Speak, my language

In the organizer's words:

The Philippines is characterized by migration. Countless people leave their homeland to work as overseas workers in the maritime and healthcare sectors, as domestic workers, musicians or entertainers in other countries, cultures and languages. The site-specific performance "Speak, my language" creates an intimate space in which the relationship of the voice to the experience of migration takes center stage. It is strongly influenced by Angeline de Dios' research and her own experience as a migrant. The sound artist and academic spent years researching the work of Filipino musicians abroad before moving to Poland herself for personal reasons. She now shares with the other migrant workers the experience of living outside her home country, but still being connected to it. Through vocal compositions and non-linear movements, supported by the choreography of Madge Reyes and the dramaturgy of Jaya Jacobo, de Dios fills the performance space with an "inner radio" that expresses the story of listening and singing to others in the Filipino voice. At the same time, the piece makes it possible to experience the persistent longing to hear oneself - between and through the many migrations into other languages, for other ears - which is both a question and a possibility.
